Consulting with others is scary, it doesn’t have to be though! It takes courage to challenge the “am I good enough” thoughts and feelings when seeking support for difficult client cases and ethical decisions.

Consulting with “Dr. Counselor Ethics”

Consultation

As professional counselors, everything we do ties to ethics! Ethical components are woven into us, throughout our lifespan, which influences our morals, belief systems, spirituality, and interactions with others (and the self). What we believe, what we say, and how we behave in the session and out of session can easily be linked back to ethics by analyzing our motives and intentions.

Identities and Intent

Professional identity is engrained into our everyday life. Counselors often believe they have to bring their “A game” or struggle in taking off their “counselor hat.” When these things occur, you will not be alone- I will be with you as we evaluate your clinical and ethical direction as related to personal and professional impact. When consulting with me you will get someone who is authentic and cares about you and your abilities to effectively counsel clients. I will support and empower you as you identify your “why” and message of intent. I provide a safe place and judgment free zone to allow you to feel confident in your process, skills, decision-making, and the counseling profession.

There will always be shades of gray

Ethics is not black and white! As counselors there is no right or wrong way to work with a client or do things; it is all about the process and the progression which occurs as a result. The act of counseling is very intentional and as counselors we must reflection on what we do, how we do it, but also how we process what we did after the fact. This identity piece spills over into every aspect of our lives both in the office and out of the office. One little detail or decision can influence the outcome. Ultimately, as counselors- our clients’ well-being is at the forefront of every decision we make including those which may be personal in nature.
